Open on Sunday?

18 April 2017 12:46
kerkevik_2014: (Default)
Is anyone saving open_on_sunday from lj?

Managed to find my favourite Doyle_sb4 fics, but that's another journal likely to disappear as she hasn't posted for seven years.

Lib Dems are nowhere near strong enough to challenge anyone. Labour are toast, but watch all those Tories masking as their MPs lickspittle their way behind Corbyn. The SNP are going to lose ground to the Tories in May and in June.

Fucking shits are going to get a bloody landslide.

So depressed.

But never have I wished more than now that I had some way with family ties to get a non-UK passport. I don't want to wait until the possibilty of Scottish Indepence, and I'm not sure I'd be happy with that solution anyway. I wish I had an opportunity for a European Union passport, but that's just desperation talking.

I just want to stop the nazis and bigots and littel englanders and empire fantasists before they destroy this country forever.

   This needs to be fought.

   This needs to be stopped.

We cannot stand by and let the Hitlers of this country win.

We have just passed the Seventy-Second anniversary of D-Day; should we let the fascists of UKIP and the Tory right, and yes sadly the fake liberals who have crossed the line by revealing that their liberal values do not include you if your skin is brown, or you aren't British (of which there will be a lot fewer if we don;t stop this).

Don't stand by, be vocal; make those in power realise that this is wrong.

Bigotry cannot be allowed to claim victory.

Share this, and support those like my dear friend elisi and her wonderful kids who will lose so much of what they love; or those who are seeking freedom from the bombs and hatred in their own lands; people just like you and me; and those kids who risk their lives to escape to something better.

Don't let Cameron's stupidity put Johnson or Farage; or their like into Downing Street. This is our country too; let's win it back. Let's give those coming after us a future of hope not hate.

First they came for the Jews...

kerkevik_2014: (Default)

And no, I've lived with UKIP since they began, and they ARE NOT eccentric middle-class buffoons. There is no real difference between them and the likes of Golden Dawn in Greece, or their ilk in Hungary; France; Germany; Netherlands; Sweden etc... etc...

They are demonstrably more dangerous BECAUSE no-one takes them seriously.

  www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jun/24/intolerance-ethnic-minority-poles-uk

I have had four messages; allegedly sent by senior Liberal Democrats today, which have not encouraged me to rejoin the national party, because they all appear to be wishing to lie down and let the wild dogs run off with the prize.

I will be a Liberal until I die, but if they are not going to fight this all the way, then I shall seek out a party here in Scotland that will fight FOR what they could not bother with. That will be the Scottish Liberal Democrats if they can prove they've got a stronger backbone.

I am of course a fine one to say stuff like this, but I am just so fucking angry right now that Pig-Fucker Cameron let a Tory party civil war put the future of everyone on this continent which has, until a little over sixty years ago, known only war, and pseudo-war for the near totality of it's 'civilised' history.

Given my family's history with male life spans, I may have very little time to have to deal with the consequences; others will not.

I don't know what to do except be alternately depressed, or angry enough to punch Farage in the face if he gets within range, right now - just trying to be productive for once in my waste-of-space life.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet...

Three-quarters of young people – a massive mandate – are predicted to have voted remain, according to a YouGov poll, while those older than us made the decision to vote in favour of an uncertain vision of a future Britain that the young emphatically did not and do not want. Thank you to those baby boomers and their parents who either voted to stay, or who, in the days before the referendum, agreed to put aside their own feelings and vote on behalf of their children and grandchildren. We appreciate you trying.

   www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jun/24/young-angry-eu-referendum

Asked I; How binding is this result?

Of course it'd be nice if some in Europe weren't being so quick to kick the bratty bigoted Brits out of the house.

   www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/24/europe-plunged-crisis-britain-votes-leave-eu-european-union

IF we can prevent this we should at least try, don't you think? Because if we don't then right-wing separatists all over Europe will be queueing up to UKIP their countries out, probably leading to a string of conflicts as all that has been slowly, painfully at times, built since 1945 tears apart and we return to the moronic policies of the past.

Or is the prospect of the Balkanisation of Europe not petrifying anyone else?

Canada's Prime Minister Demands Equality In His Cabinet, And He Shouldn't Be The Exception

LIKE MIC ON FACEBOOK:

When Canada's newly appointed prime minister, Justin Trudeau, was sworn in to office on Wednesday, he announced that he had daringly appointed 15 of his 30 cabinet roles to women. His decision inspired widespread coverage and praise — perhaps understandable, given that the choice is unprecedented in Canadian history and an anomaly in the context of male-dominated global politics. But while Trudeau's appointments are certainly commendable, they shouldn't be exceptional: In fact, equal representation should simply be the status quo.

Trudeau is the exception. "It's important to be here before you today to present to Canada a cabinet that looks like Canada," Trudeau said of his appointees on Wednesday, according to the Guardian. Such equitable political representation should be incorporated in cabinets and other political bodies the world over, and yet the global reality hardly reflects this. Only 22% of all national lawmakers around the world were female as of August, and 17% of cabinet members were women as of January, according to United Nations Women. A 2014 study found that at the current rate of progress, it will take the United States in particular an incredible 500 years to achieve gender parity in politics, the Nation reported.

The prime minister also made the effort to represent his nation's citizens by accounting for racial diversity: He assigned two aboriginal members — including a native woman as the new minister of justice —  and three Sikh politicians to his cabinet.

This choice is an encouraging step given that a Canadian study released earlier this year showed the previous Parliament failed to represent the Canadian people and, as the study's author told the Star, likely resulted in decisions that were "uninformed and/or not reflective of the general population."

Beyond parity: Trudeau's appointments do not just numerically reflect the nation, but also combat deeper biases about leadership. When women are granted opportunities to lead, they frequently occupy roles stereotypically deemed feminine: Of the 17% of government ministers who are women, the majority oversee social sectors like education and family, according to U.N. Women.

Yet studies also show that women's leadership in historically male-dominated realms can be vital. Take finance, for example: Women fill less than 20% of bank board positions hold only 3% of bank CEO roles, according to the Telegraph. Yet a 2013 Commission on Banking Standards study recommended that the banking industry ameliorate its "overwhelmingly male" culture, and other studies have questioned if the global financial crisis would have happened had more women occupied economic leadership positions.

That Trudeau notably appointed a man, Jean-Yves Duclos, as Canada's minister of Families, Children and Social Development and a woman, Chrystia Freeland, to be in charge of international trade, therefore, are important contributions to disrupting this status quo.

You can't be what you can't see. Ultimately, Trudeau's appointments aren't just models for how current governments can better reflect their own populations, but also provides a crucial model for future generations. Many have previously argued that representation is critical to encouraging girls to pursue careers in male-dominated fields across the board, and politics are no exception.

As Marie C. Wilson, founder of the White House Project — an organization that aimed to encourage women to pursue political leadership in the U.S. — has said, "you can't be what you can't see." That Trudeau has proven to young Canadians, as well as young adults the world over, that equitable political representation is possible is meaningful and will hopefully have a significant impact on generations to come.

Australia Marriage Equality Petition

15 August 2015 01:51
kerkevik_2014: (Love Makes a Family)
go.allout.org/en/a/oz-marriage-equality

Four days ago, PM Tony Abbott told Liberal party members that they’re banned from voting ‘Yes’ on marriage equality. It was a dirty trick that could block marriage equality for years.

But now brave politicians are taking a stand. A couple of days ago, MP Tim Watts gave a passionate speech that's gone viral. Four bold politicians from Abbott’s own party have promised to defy the government and vote YES anyway.

It’s the start of a rebellion that could make marriage possible for thousands in weeks rather than years. Here's what we need: a huge global outcry for equality will show these politicians that we’ve got their back. Better yet, it could inspire dozens more to vote for equality.

Click the link and your name will be added AUTOMATICALLY to our global petition, calling on Aussie politicians to defy the government and vote YES to love. We’ll deliver it directly to Parliament in just 3 days: go.allout.org/en/a/oz-marriage-equality

A cross-party bill on marriage equality will be introduced to the Aussie Parliament next week. The government previously promised that a bill with broad support would be taken seriously. But they’ve broken their word by banning party politicians a free vote on marriage equality.

But 70% of Aussies want marriage equality. And countries from Canada to Ireland to Uruguay have already made it legal for gay and lesbian couples to marry. All Out members speaking up from around the world will remind Liberal politicians that Australia is lagging behind.

Thanks for going All Out,

Andre, Rose, Oscar and the rest of the All Out team.

P.S. At a secret meeting this week, Australia’s Liberal party banned its members from voting YES on marriage equality. Thanks to this sneaky move, the bill could die and marriage equality could be shelved for at least a year!

Net Neutrality Petition

20 August 2014 20:23

thehpalliance:

If you use YouTube, you need to know this.
You’ve heard all these rumblings about Net Neutrality over the past several months. Let’s get real: this is about controlling online video. It is estimated that by 2017, video content will account for 80-90% of all global Internet traffic.
This isn’t just about not being able to binge-watch a series on Netflix. It’s about the future of online video as we know it.
Whether your YouTube channel is home to daily vlogs, short films, or just that one video from when the cinnamon challenge seemed like a good idea, you’re a video creator. Your content and comments help shape this community. Let’s keep it that way.
Net Neutrality means that your YouTube videos reach people at the same speed as clips from last night’s episode of the Tonight Show. It means a level playing field for video creators looking to reach an audience. But new Net Neutrality rules could mess that up.
Here’s the deal: Telecommunications companies already charge us to access the Internet through our homes and our phones. New FCC rules could allow them to also charge content providers (like YouTube, Netflix, and even PBS) for access to our eyeballs. It could create a fast lane for Jimmy Fallon’s clips, and slow lane for your YouTube videos.
It is really important that the FCC understands that online video creators care about Net Neutrality. Even if you’ve only ever uploaded ONE VIDEO, you are a creator and you have a voice.
If you can, please add your channel to our petition. We’ll deliver this to the FCC in September and demonstrate that the online video community cares about this issue.
Sign the petition, then spread the word.
